What this one lacked: world building. World building, world building, world building.
Yes, it’s set in Russia and you could easily look up how St Petersburg looked in 1825 or what they wore and what the tsar looked like, but I’d very much like to read without constantly googling stuff. And Russia has such a colorful history – you could easily spend a few sentences every now and then to describe the layout of St Petersburg or how the Winter Palace looked or any other places they end up in and it would improve this story so, so much!
Alright, once I got that out of the way; it’s not a bad story. There are details that would have needed to be changed – such as the text saying Vika’s name when it was from Nikolai’s POV a couple of chapters before he actually finds out about her name. But the idea is good and the historical base of it is interesting, especially as the tsar and tsarina have both existed, as has (possibly?) Nikolai and Pasha. But I want more descriptions!
Also the love triangle in this fell a bit flat. It was way too traditional – for a love triangle – and you sort of knew all along how it was going to end. I prefer love triangles where I’m constantly thrown between one ship and the other, people!
