Okay, I had been warned prior to starting this that this book could be quite dark – and it did not disappoint!
So a lot of YA-books with female main characters have a tendency to try and make the woman complex and with just as many dark and bloody desires as male characters are given, but then they fail at this because of that they at the same time want to write her as someone who is “traditionally female”. A few authors, however, do succeed in making a woman dark and Marie Lu is one of them! The main character of this book – Adelina – is deliciously dark and I have a feeling that this might be something that continues and becomes even more noticeable in the next book.
In comparison I found several of the male characters to be slightly underdeveloped, which is why I didn’t rate this novel with 5 stars. I hope, however, that this will change in The Rose Society.
Also, as I listened to this as an audio book, I have to say that this adaption had some really amazing readers! Always love when that happens 🙂
